Ese Brume, one of the contingents of the Team Nigeria representing the country at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics came third overall in the Women’s Long Jump event. The Nigerian athlete finished with a leap of 6.97m just behind the current World champion Malaika Mihambo who retained her world dominance with a close win with a jump of 7.00m. Ese’s United States’ counterpart Brittney Rees clenched the silver media.

Ese’s medal is the first medal by a Nigerian at the Olympic Games in the past 13 years. She is also the first African record holder in the women’s Long Jump event having qualified for the final round of the long jump on Sunday with a jump of 6.76m, 1cm higher than the requisite mark.

Ese Brume became the only Nigeria’s sole representative in the long jumps at the Tokyo Olympics after the disqualification of Ruth Usoro by the Athletics Integrity Unit.  She was also a bronze medalist at the last World Championship in Doha.
