The Premium Trust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon has secured a Bronze Label certification from World Athletics, marking a major achievement for the event now entering its second edition after a successful debut in 2024.
The recognition places the Abuja race among officially certified international road races, boosting its credibility and appeal to elite runners across the continent.
Managing Director and CEO of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Yetunde Olopade, described the Bronze Label status as proof of the company’s continued commitment to hosting world-class sporting events in Nigeria.
“This recognition reflects our dedication to excellence. We will continue to deliver world-class sports events, and Saturday’s race will be another testament to that commitment,” Olopade said.
She also commended the title sponsor, Premium Trust Bank, for its financial and strategic support, noting that the bank’s investment has been central to lifting the marathon to international standards.
“To our sole sponsors and partner, Premium Trust Bank, this marathon stands today because of your commitment, vision, and investment in the future of Nigerian sports. Your belief in the power of road races to inspire communities, engage young people, and drive economic activity is the reason we are here today,” she added.
Elite Runners, Prize Money Unveiled
Head of the race’s technical committee, Yusuf Ali, announced that about 30 elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nigeria are expected to participate.
The prize structure includes:
- $8,000 for the overall winner
- Prize money for the top eight finishers, ranging from $8,000 to $500
- Special prizes for top Nigerian athletes, starting from ₦2 million
- A new student category with prizes up to ₦1 million, courtesy of the Managing Director of Premium Trust Bank
Race Route and Schedule
The marathon will flag off at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, starting opposite the National Federal Fire Service on Muhammadu Buhari Way. Runners will finish at the Velodrome inside the MKO Abiola National Stadium.
Organisers say they expect a larger turnout this year, driven by increased visibility from the new Bronze Label status and improved logistics for athletes and spectators.
