The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced plans to place Nigerian athletes in a four-week residential training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Confirming the arrangement, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the decision to site the camp within the host country was strategic, aimed at enhancing coordination, minimising travel fatigue, and preventing last-minute logistical challenges for Team Nigeria.
Olopade explained that early relocation would enable athletes to acclimatise to the competition environment and train under conditions similar to those expected during the Games.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Commission, Kehinde Ajayi, Team Nigeria is expected to arrive at the Aberdeen camp four weeks before the opening ceremony. The period will be used for acclimatisation, technical fine-tuning, and team bonding.
The NSC noted that the move reflects lessons drawn from previous international competitions, with an emphasis on early planning, athlete-friendly accommodation, and a smooth transition into competition mode.
The Commission further disclosed that preparations for the Games would be guided by recommendations from the Elite Podium Board, underscoring its commitment to professionalism, evidence-based planning, and global best practices in sports management.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to hold in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 and will feature 10 sports, with Team Nigeria targeting strong performances across all disciplines.
