The Nigerian Independent System Operator has blamed the current decline in electricity generation on inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants across the country.
In a statement issued on Friday via its official X handle, the agency said the prevailing average generation of about 4,300 megawatts is largely due to generation shortfalls caused by gas supply limitations. It noted that thermal plants account for the dominant share of Nigeria’s power generation mix, making the grid highly vulnerable to any disruption in gas availability.
According to NISO, thermal power plants require an estimated 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to operate at optimal capacity. However, as of February 23, 2026, actual gas supply stood at approximately 692.00 million standard cubic feet per day, representing less than 43 percent of the required daily volume.
The agency explained that the shortfall has significantly constrained generation output, leading to reduced energy allocation to Distribution Companies. It added that whenever total system generation drops considerably, the system operator is compelled to implement load shedding while dispatching available energy in line with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Multi-Year Tariff Order allocation percentages to maintain grid stability and prevent disturbances.
NISO apologised to electricity consumers and market participants for the disruption in supply, acknowledging the impact of the shortage. The agency assured the public that it is working with relevant stakeholders to restore full energy allocation once gas supply improves and generation capacity rebounds.
