Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s historic 1996 Olympic football team, describing the Dream Team as the greatest side in the nation’s football history as the country marked the 30th anniversary of its historic Olympic gold medal triumph.
Sani made the remarks in a post shared on his verified X account on Monday, August 3, commemorating three decades since Nigeria defeated Argentina to win Africa’s first ever Olympic football gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Reflecting on the landmark achievement, the former lawmaker said the accomplishment remains unmatched in Nigerian football and praised the Dream Team for setting a standard that continues to inspire generations of footballers.
He also urged the current generation of Super Eagles players to emulate the spirit, determination and success of the Olympic champions in order to restore the country’s status as a football powerhouse.
According to Sani, the present Super Eagles have fallen short of the heights attained by the celebrated 1996 squad, expressing hope that the younger generation of players would build on the enduring legacy left by the gold medal winning team.
Joining the nationwide celebration, the Super Eagles also commemorated the anniversary on their official X account by sharing photographs from the memorable Atlanta 1996 campaign with the caption, “On This Day in 1996.”
The images revisited some of the defining moments of Nigeria’s remarkable Olympic journey, including the famous semi final victory over Brazil and the dramatic 3-2 triumph over Argentina in the final that secured Africa’s first ever Olympic football gold medal.
The Dream Team’s achievement remains one of the greatest milestones in the history of Nigerian and African football, with the squad continuing to be celebrated as a symbol of excellence, resilience and national pride three decades after its historic success.
