Former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has said Manchester City hold a psychological advantage over Arsenal in the ongoing English Premier League title race.
Arsenal currently sit at the top of the table, six points clear of City, although they have played one game more. The two sides are set to face off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in what is widely seen as a decisive fixture in the title race.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney noted that City’s experience and winning mentality could prove crucial as the season approaches its climax.
According to him, Manchester City’s familiarity with winning league titles, combined with the presence of a highly experienced manager, gives them an edge over Arsenal.
“Manchester City know how to win the title and have a manager who knows how to do it,” Rooney said.
He added that City’s players are more likely to remain calm under pressure, unlike Arsenal, who may struggle mentally if results do not go their way.
Rooney explained that a dip in form can lead to self-doubt among players, affecting overall performance.
“When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking where the next goal or win will come from. That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” he said.
City boosted their title chances with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea, capitalising on Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth.
Rooney described Sunday’s clash as a potential title decider, stating that the winner would likely emerge as favourites to lift the trophy.
He suggested that a draw would not be a bad result for Arsenal but advised Mikel Arteta’s side to adopt a more pragmatic approach.
Rooney urged Arsenal to remain compact defensively, close spaces, and rely on counter-attacks, even if the style of play may not appeal to fans.
“They have to do anything to stop City winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring,” he added.
