Brazilian forward Neymar reignited discussion about a possible return to the national team after scoring twice in Santos’ 2–1 league victory over Vasco da Gama on Thursday night.
The 34-year-old ended a goal drought stretching back to December, delivering a decisive performance as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. The brace marks an important milestone in his return to competitive action following a lengthy injury layoff.
Neymar, who faced criticism over his recent form and fitness, responded after the match by dismissing doubts about his ability. He noted that perceptions in football can change quickly, adding that he had only played his third game of the year and just his second full 90 minutes, admitting he experienced cramping late in the encounter.
Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has not featured for the national team since October 2023 due to recurring injuries. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has stated that only players who are fully fit and match-ready will be considered for selection, a condition Neymar is working to satisfy.
The upcoming FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Canada, Mexico and the United States from June 11 to July 19, with Neymar’s recent performance strengthening his case for inclusion in Brazil’s squad.
