Nigeria has lost one of its football greats. Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and captain, Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodomayana, has died.
Rufai, 61, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday after a prolonged illness. His death, though yet to be officially announced by his family, has been confirmed by a senior Lagos State Government official.
Peter Rufai was a towering figure in Nigerian football, best remembered for his heroics at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where he captained the Super Eagles to glory, and at two FIFA World Cups — 1994 in the USA and 1998 in France. Known for his agility, leadership, and calm demeanor between the posts, Rufai earned over 60 caps for the national team and was widely respected both at home and abroad.
Beyond football, Rufai was admired for his contributions to youth development and sports advocacy, inspiring generations of aspiring footballers.
Tributes are already pouring in from former teammates, fans, football administrators, and government officials who describe his passing as a monumental loss to the nation.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
