Nigeria National League (NNL) side Abakaliki FC continued their giant-killing streak in the 2025 President Federation Cup, defeating Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) outfit Ikorodu City 5-4 on penalties to book a historic spot in the final.
The semi-final clash, held at the Bwari Township Stadium in Abuja on Wednesday, ended in a goalless stalemate after 90 minutes, but it was the Salt City club who held their nerve during the shootout to secure a dramatic victory.
Abakaliki FC have emerged as the surprise package of this year’s tournament, eliminating top-tier teams at every stage. Their fairytale run began with a penalty shootout win over Katsina United in the round of 32, followed by a stunning 2-0 triumph over nine-time NPFL champions Enyimba in the Round of 16. They then edged out Nasarawa United 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the quarter-finals.
With their latest win, Abakaliki will face Kwara United in the final, marking the first-ever appearance in the competition’s showpiece for both clubs.
Chairman of the NNL, George Aluo, hailed the Ebonyi-based side for their impressive run and resilience.
“Abakaliki FC’s performance is a testament to the quality in the NNL,” Aluo said. “They’ve knocked out some of the country’s top teams, and their place in the final is well-deserved. This is no fluke—it’s proof of hard work and talent.”
