The Ogun State Government has issued a public health alert following a rise in reported cases of diphtheria across the state.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Health urged residents to take preventive measures, including maintaining good hygiene, ensuring children receive routine vaccinations, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
The government expressed concern that the spread of the bacterial infection, which can cause severe respiratory issues and, in some cases, death, poses a significant public health risk if not contained.
Health authorities advised residents to avoid self-medication and report suspected cases promptly to the nearest hospital or health centre for proper diagnosis and treatment.
The ministry also appealed for calm, assuring the public that surveillance and response teams have been activated across all 20 local government areas to track, contain, and treat new cases.
Diphtheria, a highly contagious disease preventable through vaccination, has seen outbreaks in parts of Nigeria in recent years, prompting nationwide alerts.
