In a disappointing turn of events, Nigerian artist David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, faced defeat in all three categories he was nominated for at the 66th Grammy Awards.
Davido’s hopeful tracks, ‘Feel’ for Best Global Music Performance, ‘Timeless’ for Album of the Year, and ‘Unavailable’ for Best African Music Performance, failed to secure any wins at the prestigious awards ceremony.
Despite expressing optimism and anticipation in a pre-Grammy interview with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly, where he vowed to celebrate wildly if he secured the Best African Music Performance award, Davido experienced a setback.
Shortly after the announcement, Davido gracefully accepted defeat, offering congratulations to South African singer Tyla, who clinched the inaugural Best African Music Performance category with her song ‘Water.’
Reflecting on the significance of the African Music Category, Davido emphasized, “I am just happy that we all get to shine. What if there was no (African) category? So, at the end of the day, we should all be happy that we have this category, something to call our own. Whoever wins, it’s okay. If I win, we are celebrating. We go crazy.” He highlighted that the inclusion of the African Music Category at the global music awards was long overdue.
