Yola, September 23, 2025 — A 73-year-old retired civil servant, Joseph Kwada, is among hundreds of Adamawa residents who have regained their sight following a free medical outreach organised by Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) in Yola.
The initiative, conducted in partnership with the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, offered free consultations, medication, eyeglasses, and surgical procedures to residents of the state capital.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, MESL’s medical technical officer, Salisu Dabban, said the outreach, held at the Ajiya Clinic in Jimeta, Yola, is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
“The outreach commenced with screening and the dispensing of glasses on September 17 and 18. Free surgeries were then carried out between September 19 and 20. Over 500 glasses were distributed, while more than 1,014 people were examined and given medication,” Dabban explained.
He noted that 45 successful eye surgeries, including cataract and pterygium operations, were conducted by a 20-member team of ophthalmologists and theatre nurses.
“This project is the first of its kind by any corporate body in Adamawa State. All services rendered are completely free of charge,” he added.
Patients expressed gratitude for the intervention. Kwada, who had been unable to afford surgery, described the treatment as life-changing. Another beneficiary, Hajiya Aishatu Umar, revealed that she had lived in seclusion for 12 years due to poor eyesight but could now return to normal life after regaining her vision.
Residents and health workers hailed the outreach as a significant contribution to community well-being, especially in a region where access to specialised eye care remains limited.
