Arsenal F.C. moved a step closer to ending their 22-year wait for the Premier League title after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley F.C. at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
A first-half header from Kai Havertz proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s side extended their lead at the top of the table to five points ahead of reigning champions Manchester City F.C..
Arsenal could clinch the Premier League title as early as Tuesday if Manchester City fail to defeat AFC Bournemouth. Even if City win their remaining matches, the Gunners would still secure the title with victory over Crystal Palace F.C. on Sunday.
Despite facing an already relegated Burnley side, Arsenal found it difficult to dominate the encounter and were forced to battle hard for all three points.
Leandro Trossard came close to scoring after striking the post from long range, while Bukayo Saka had penalty appeals waved away following a low cross from Havertz.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 37th minute when Havertz rose highest to head home Saka’s corner kick, marking Arsenal’s 18th goal from a corner in the league this season.
However, Arsenal were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men after Havertz escaped a red card for a late challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu. Following a VAR review, the referee maintained the original yellow card decision.
Arteta later introduced Viktor Gyökeres as Arsenal focused on protecting their narrow lead.
Although the hosts failed to add to their advantage, their defensive discipline once again proved crucial. Since their defeat to Manchester City last month, Arsenal have now recorded four consecutive league clean sheets to strengthen their hold on the title race.
