The United Bank for Africa has dismissed as false a viral social media report claiming that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife.
In a statement issued in Lagos and signed by the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, the institution described the claim as fabricated, malicious, and intended to mislead the public while damaging the reputation of the businessman.
The bank disclosed that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, adding that three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and spread of the claims have been arrested. Those identified include Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
According to UBA, investigations are ongoing and could result in further arrests and prosecutions of others connected to the publication and dissemination of the content.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist notice to individuals and platforms circulating the report, directing them to immediately remove the content, halt further dissemination, and preserve all related digital records, including communications and metadata, pending legal proceedings.
UBA warned that failure to comply with the directive could attract legal action, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, and damages. It reiterated its commitment to protecting the reputation and integrity of both its brand and its chairman, stating that it would pursue all available civil and criminal remedies against those found responsible.
