A former senator representing Oyo Central and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Ayoade Adeseun, has resigned his traditional title as Mayegun of Ogbomosoland following a dispute with the Oba Ghandi Olaoye.
Adeseun announced his resignation during a press conference held in Onipanu community, Ogbomoso, on Sunday, stating that there was no need for the monarch to reverse his earlier suspension.
The former lawmaker, who served in the Senate between 2011 and 2015, attributed his decision to what he described as high-handedness by the monarch.
The development follows the monarch’s earlier decision to suspend Adeseun indefinitely on March 23, 2026, over alleged gross misconduct. The suspension, conveyed in a letter signed by the palace secretary, cited insubordination, disregard for authority, and persistent disrespect towards the traditional institution.
Responding, Adeseun said he was unwilling to reconcile with the monarch, adding that his decision to step down from the title was final.
He also accused the Soun of pursuing divisive policies, particularly along religious lines, which he said had disrupted the longstanding peaceful coexistence among residents of Ogbomosoland.
Adeseun emphasised the need for adherence to the rule of law, referencing an ongoing court case involving the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, and urged the monarch to allow the judicial process to take its course.
The dispute has drawn attention within the community, highlighting tensions surrounding traditional authority and governance in the area.
