The Cross River State Government has flagged off its Easter “Season of Sweetness” Free Transport Scheme to cushion the impact of rising transportation costs on residents.
The initiative, introduced as part of the state’s festive support programmes, provides free transportation services for commuters across major routes within and outside the state.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Bassey Otu, represented by his deputy, emphasised the critical role of transportation in driving economic growth and development. He noted that efficient movement across land, air, and waterways remains central to the state’s development agenda.
The Deputy Governor described the scheme as a timely intervention in response to increasing fuel prices and transport fares, adding that it builds on the success recorded during the December festive period when residents benefited from similar support.
He assured commuters of their safety, stressing that the service is entirely free, with monitoring mechanisms, including dedicated contact lines, put in place to address any misconduct or violations.
Transport operators involved in the programme noted that the scheme not only eases the burden on commuters but also creates temporary employment opportunities.
Many residents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a much-needed relief during the Easter season.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the programme as part of its broader strategy of promoting people-centred governance and improving the welfare of citizens.
