Pope Leo XIV has condemned the growing divide between the rich and the poor, calling attention to the moral responsibility that comes with wealth in a world increasingly affected by conflict and inequality.
The pontiff made the remarks during a visit to Monaco, a small Catholic principality on the French Riviera widely known for its concentration of wealth.
The trip, which marks the first Western European visit of his papacy, drew attention due to Monaco’s global profile despite its size.
Speaking from the balcony of the Prince’s Palace, the Pope criticised what he described as unjust systems that deepen inequality and create divisions within society.
He warned against “structures of sin” that widen the gap between the privileged and the marginalised, as well as between allies and adversaries.
Pope Leo XIV urged wealthy individuals and nations to use their resources in ways that promote justice and fairness, particularly at a time when global tensions and displays of power continue to threaten peace.
He stressed that wealth should be directed toward upholding law, equity and social stability, rather than reinforcing inequality.
The Pope’s message adds to ongoing global conversations about economic disparity and the role of leadership and responsibility in addressing social imbalances.
