The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has released former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai after the death of his mother.
El-Rufai had been in the custody of the anti-graft agency since February 19, 2026, following his arraignment on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering.
He was earlier arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, which adjourned hearing of his bail application to March 31.
Confirmation of his release came from his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who disclosed the development in a social media post.
The release followed the passing of El-Rufai’s mother, Hajiya Umma, whose death was announced by her grandson, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai. She reportedly died in Cairo on Friday.
Sources indicated that her remains are expected to be flown back to Nigeria for burial, though details of El-Rufai’s release conditions had not been made public as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have expressed condolences to the former governor over the loss.
