The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has deployed a mobile control tower at Murtala Muhammed International Airport following a fire incident that disrupted air-ground communication at the airport’s old terminal.
The agency said the move is part of efforts to maintain safe and efficient air navigation operations at the busy Lagos airport.
Speaking during an on-site inspection, the Director of Safety Electronics and Engineering Services at NAMA, Engr. Terese Ihenacho, described the deployment as a major operational milestone, noting that the facility is fully functional and ready for use.
She said all necessary test runs had been successfully completed, adding that air traffic controllers are prepared to commence operations immediately.
Ihenacho explained that the mobile tower had been reconfigured to meet local operational needs, with enhanced systems to improve efficiency and safety. According to her, the facility now features seamless connectivity to Centrex and TRACON systems, as well as a smart strip system integrated alongside the conventional manual process.
She added that the deployment aligns with global aviation standards while reflecting local innovations tailored to Nigeria’s operating environment.
To further strengthen operations, the agency disclosed plans to deploy a second mobile control tower to serve Runway 18R. The final positioning of the facility, she said, will be determined in collaboration with key aviation stakeholders, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
The deployment is part of NAMA’s broader contingency strategy aimed at minimising disruptions caused by infrastructure challenges or emergency situations affecting the main control tower.
Supporting infrastructure at the temporary site includes solar-powered lighting, reinforced structural systems, additional power supply, and comprehensive CCTV coverage.
Ihenacho also assured that efforts are ongoing to improve the welfare and working conditions of personnel at the facility, while commending staff for their dedication in restoring operational stability after the incident.
