The has refuted claims circulating on social media that a woman who reported an alleged sexual assault was arrested, stating that she voluntarily presented herself to authorities and is currently receiving medical attention.
The clarification follows a viral video posted on TikTok by a user identified as Mirabel, who alleged she was attacked in her apartment by an unknown intruder. The video quickly spread across social media platforms, including X, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.
Although initial reports suggested the incident occurred in Lagos State, police later confirmed that the alleged assault took place in Ogijo, Ogun State, placing the matter under the jurisdiction of the state command.
Police spokesperson said the complainant first reported the case at the Ibafo Police Division before being transferred to the appropriate division in Ogijo for further investigation.
According to him, the woman was not in a stable condition to provide detailed information at the time of her report and was immediately taken for comprehensive medical evaluation.
“At no time was the victim arrested,” the command stated, emphasizing that her wellbeing remains a priority while investigations continue.
The police urged members of the public to rely on verified information and refrain from spreading unconfirmed claims as the matter is being handled professionally.
