The Government has confirmed the death of 37 miners following a carbon monoxide gas leak at an underground mining site in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred at a mining facility in Zurak, was initially reported as a case of suspected gas exposure. However, after preliminary assessments and rescue operations, state authorities verified the fatalities.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Rangnap, confirmed the development in a telephone interview, noting that the casualty figure could rise as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
Emergency response teams have since been deployed to the affected site, while authorities intensify efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the gas leak.
The state government said further details would be made available as investigations progress.
