President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of prominent Kano-based businessman and trade union leader, Bature Abdulaziz, who passed away over the weekend.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President described Abdulaziz’s death as a significant loss not only to the Kano business community but to Nigeria at large, given his far-reaching influence in commerce and trade.
According to the statement, the late Abdulaziz was the National President of the Harmonised Traders Association of Nigeria and held several leadership positions in commerce-related unions, where he played a key role in promoting business growth and economic empowerment.
President Tinubu also acknowledged the support he received from Abdulaziz during the 2023 presidential campaign, noting his consistent advocacy for national unity and patriotism through the Patriotic Elders Network for Peace (PENP), which he founded.
“The President acknowledged the support he received from Dr Abdulaziz during the 2023 campaigns and his persistent advocacy for national unity and patriotism through the Patriotic Elders Network for Peace,” the statement said.
The President extended his condolences to the Kano business community, the people and government of Kano State, as well as the family of the deceased, urging them to take comfort in the enduring legacy and positive impact Abdulaziz had on his community and the nation.
Abdulaziz was widely regarded as a leading figure in Kano’s trading sector. He first rose to prominence as a leader of the Kantin Kwari Market Traders Association before becoming the National President of the Harmonised Traders Union of Nigeria, where he championed the welfare of traders and the development of commerce nationwide.
He also served as National President of the Patriotic Elders Network for Peace, an organisation focused on national security, peacebuilding and political advocacy.
His death was confirmed by one of his sons, Ismail Abdulaziz.
