A prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu over his recent trip to the United Kingdom, describing the visit as insensitive in light of recent deadly attacks in Maiduguri.
Okonkwo, a former spokesperson of the Labour Party, said the president’s decision to proceed with the state visit shortly after the suicide bombings that killed at least 23 people and injured more than 100 others was deeply disrespectful to victims and security personnel who lost their lives.
Speaking during a televised interview, Okonkwo accused the president of disregarding national grief, stating that the visit projected an image of indifference at a time when the country should be mourning. He argued that cancelling the trip would have demonstrated leadership and empathy, while also sending a strong message about the value placed on Nigerian lives.
He further questioned the presence of the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, on the trip, while Vice President Kashim Shettima attended a political event in Anambra State. According to him, such decisions reflect poorly on the government’s priorities amid a worsening security situation.
Okonkwo also raised concerns about the morale of the armed forces, noting that honouring fallen soldiers is critical to sustaining their commitment. He warned that failing to adequately recognise sacrifices made by military personnel could weaken national resolve in combating insecurity.
In addition, the ADC chieftain expressed doubts about the administration’s capacity to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, citing issues such as insufficient troop deployment, rising hardship, and increasing vulnerability of citizens to criminal recruitment.
Meanwhile, following directives from President Tinubu, top military officials have moved to Maiduguri to oversee security operations. Among those reported in the state are the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, as efforts intensify to address the aftermath of the attacks.
The situation continues to draw national attention, with calls mounting for decisive action to curb the growing insecurity across the country.
