Zenith Bank on Wednesday opened the fifth edition of its flagship technology showcase, the Zenith Tech Fair 5.0, in Lagos, with the bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, paying an effusive tribute to Founder and Chairman, Dr. Jim Ovia, CFR.
Speaking at the event themed Future Forward 5.0, Umeoji described Ovia as “the Nostradamus of our time” and “the godfather of modern Nigerian banking,” crediting his vision and leadership for positioning Zenith Bank at the forefront of digital innovation for over three decades.

She noted that Ovia’s technological foresight transformed the banking landscape at a time when manual operations dominated the sector. According to her, Ovia introduced groundbreaking initiatives in the early 1990s—installing satellite dishes across branches for real-time banking, implementing transaction alerts, pioneering Nigeria’s first ATM gallery, and launching early internet banking platforms.
“This foundation, built on people, technology, and service, created a culture that values innovation, rewards excellence, and embraces change,” she said.
Umeoji also highlighted Ovia’s contributions beyond the banking sector, including his role as the first President of the Nigeria Internet Group and his philanthropic investments in youth development through thousands of scholarships awarded by the Jim Ovia Foundation.

She explained that the Zenith Tech Fair, conceived six years ago by Ovia, embodies his belief that Africa’s future must be shaped by homegrown innovation, digital solutions, and entrepreneurial talent.
“Everything we celebrate today at the fair rests on his discipline, dedication, and uncompromising pursuit of excellence,” she added.

The event, which drew a large audience of innovators, tech enthusiasts, and industry leaders, continues Zenith Bank’s commitment to fostering technological advancement and supporting Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
