Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling instead for a peaceful resolution of the political crisis in the state.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made their positions known on Tuesday, barely 24 hours after two of their colleagues adopted a similar stance.
Although they maintained that the governor and his deputy allegedly breached certain constitutional provisions, the legislators said they were persuaded to reconsider their position following interventions by respected leaders and stakeholders within the state.
With the latest development, four out of the 26 lawmakers who initially signed the notice of alleged misconduct against the governor have now publicly indicated support for dialogue and alternative mechanisms to resolve the impasse.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to resume plenary on January 15, 2026, amid growing calls for restraint and reconciliation.
Earlier, Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma Constituency, alongside Peter Abbey of the Degema Constituency, had announced their withdrawal from the impeachment move during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. The two lawmakers urged their colleagues to halt the impeachment process and pursue other avenues to address the crisis.
The unfolding developments reflect increasing pressure on the Assembly to de-escalate tensions and seek a consensus-driven approach to resolving the standoff between the legislature and the executive.
