Two persons have been confirmed dead and five others injured following a multi-vehicle accident at Obere along the Ota-Idiroko Road in Ogun State.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, in a telephone interview.
Akinbiyi disclosed that the crash was triggered when a truck rammed into several vehicles on the expressway, leading to significant casualties.
He said the collision involved five vehicles: a white MAN Diesel truck (EKY 918 YC), an ash Suzuki minibus (AGL 81 YF), a yellow Suzuki minibus (LND 928 YD), and two yellow TVS tricycles (AGL 781 QP and AAA 300 QV).
According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the truck driver lost control after falling asleep at the wheel, a situation worsened by excessive speed.
“Twenty-one persons comprising nine males and 12 females were involved in the crash. Five victims — two males and three females — sustained injuries, while two male victims died,” he said.
He added that operatives of TRACE and other emergency responders swiftly managed traffic at the scene, while officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps evacuated the injured to a nearby hospital. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Ilaro.
Akinbiyi noted that all vehicles involved had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
