President Bola Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), on the occasion of his 91st birthday, describing him as a visionary leader and steadfast patriot whose legacy continues to strengthen Nigeria’s unity and progress.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu joined family members, friends, and well-wishers across the country in celebrating the elder statesman’s remarkable life and service.
The President commended General Gowon’s “unwavering patriotism, visionary leadership, and enduring contributions to national peace and development,” noting that his statesmanship has been instrumental in promoting stability and cohesion across the nation.
“General Gowon’s exemplary leadership and continued counsel in national affairs remain invaluable to the growth and stability of our nation,” the statement read in part.
President Tinubu prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the former Nigerian leader, wishing him long life, good health, and renewed strength to keep contributing to humanity.
General Yakubu Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most respected leaders. His administration oversaw the end of the Nigerian Civil War and initiated the post-war “Reconciliation, Reconstruction, and Rehabilitation” policy that helped shape the nation’s recovery and unity.
