Three masqueraders have been arrested in Akwa Ibom State for violating an executive order prohibiting the public display of masquerades on streets and other public places.
The suspects were accused of inflicting bodily injury on a member of the public, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Azare, confirmed the arrest and reiterated that the command would strictly enforce the executive order banning the public display of Ekpo masquerades.
Governor Umo Eno had earlier signed the executive order restricting masquerade activities across the state, citing concerns over insecurity, violence, and public nuisance. While reaffirming respect for cultural traditions, the governor said the measure was necessary to restore order, safety and dignity in society.
Azare said the police command was fully complying with the directive, which limits masquerade activities to approved locations and requires prior police permission and security coverage.
“This measure has significantly reduced violence and disorder, and there will be no compromise in enforcing the law,” the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, TVC News recalls that three other suspects previously arrested for assaulting members of the public under the guise of masquerade celebrations have been arraigned and remanded at a Nigerian Correctional Centre. The suspects are facing charges related to conspiracy, extortion and causing grievous bodily harm.
