The Senate on Thursday confirmed Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following a brief but decisive screening session that lasted less than 30 minutes.
Lawmakers expressed confidence in Doro’s qualifications, describing him as a seasoned technocrat with the competence to contribute meaningfully to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Born in Kwall, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Doro becomes the third minister from the state in the current cabinet. During his appearance before the Senate, he pledged to promote fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s humanitarian and social development programmes.
“I will create a humanitarian ecosystem that is inclusive, guided by impartiality and independence,” he told the lawmakers.
After reviewing his credentials and listening to his policy vision, senators unanimously asked him to “take a bow and go,” signaling his confirmation without any objection.
President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate, seeking Doro’s confirmation in accordance with Section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s request during plenary and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration.
Doro’s nomination follows the elevation of his predecessor, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who now serves as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an earlier statement, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Doro as “a highly qualified professional with over two decades of experience across clinical practice, pharmaceutical management, and strategic leadership in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”
Aged 56, Doro holds degrees in Pharmacy and Law, an MBA in IT-driven business strategy, and a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice. He is also an Independent Prescriber and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with experience in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) across urgent care, GP practices, and hospital settings.
With Thursday’s confirmation, Dr. Doro is expected to be sworn in as a member of the Federal Executive Council at the next cabinet meeting.
