Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned the Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, as part of efforts to preserve and celebrate the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The monument, unveiled on Tuesday, symbolises the enduring cultural identity of Lagos and pays tribute to the iconic Eyo Adimu Orisa Festival, one of the city’s most celebrated traditional events.
The John Randle Centre serves as a major hub for Yoruba history, art and culture, housing exhibitions on Yoruba mythology, fashion and notable historical figures. The commissioning of the monument forms part of activities lined up for the Eyo Festival and the annual “Detty December” celebrations, which highlight Lagos’ cultural vibrancy and Nigeria’s diverse heritage.
Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the occasion as a significant and wholesome cultural experience, noting that the Eyo festival represents the spirit, history and identity of Lagos.
He commended the artist and creator of the monument, Dotun Popoola, for deploying his creative skills to project Lagos as a cradle and symbol of culture, adding that the installation further reinforces the state’s commitment to promoting arts, culture and tourism.
