Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – Nigeria has lost one of its most revered Christian leaders as Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, the spiritual leader and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, has passed away at the age of 80.
His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday, noting that the evangelist “gloriously transitioned to eternal rest” on October 6, 2025, after decades of impactful ministry.
Describing him as a “faithful soldier of the cross,” the family said Ukpai’s life was wholly devoted to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through evangelism, teaching, and prophetic ministry.
“He was a faithful servant who spread the gospel with passion and integrity. His teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations,” the family’s statement read.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Rev. Ukpai became a towering figure in Nigeria’s Pentecostal movement, holding crusades across Africa and beyond that drew millions seeking salvation, healing, and revival.
Born in Abia State, Ukpai founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA) — a global Christian mission known for its emphasis on faith, leadership development, and community transformation. His ministry championed unity among believers and promoted a message of hope, deliverance, and empowerment.
He was also known for mentoring numerous pastors and evangelists across denominations, many of whom credit him as a spiritual father whose guidance shaped their ministries.
Beyond the pulpit, Ukpai was celebrated as a family man — a loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to countless individuals who looked to him for both spiritual and personal counsel.
The family expressed gratitude to Nigerians and the global Christian community for their outpouring of love and prayers, assuring that details of his funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
While his death marks the end of an era in Nigerian evangelism, his teachings, humanitarian works, and unwavering faith continue to resonate within the church and beyond.
“Though we mourn his physical departure, we rejoice that he has finished his race and is now resting in eternal praise,” the family added.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai’s life and ministry stand as a testament to the biblical words, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
