Security operatives on Tuesday dispersed protesters gathered at the in Abuja, firing canisters of teargas to break up the crowd.
The police intervention followed attempts by some demonstrators to forcefully gain entry into the National Assembly complex.
Eyewitnesses said tensions escalated after the arrival of protest leaders, including former presidential candidate and former Minister of Youth and Sports .
Shortly after their arrival, some protesters reportedly attempted to scale the perimeter fence of the complex, prompting security personnel to respond with teargas in a bid to disperse the crowd and prevent a breach.
The situation was brought under control as protesters retreated from the entrance of the legislative complex.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the protest or confirming whether any arrests were made.
