The Lagos State Police Command has cleared Pastor Paul Adefarasin, Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, of any wrongdoing following a viral video that showed him holding what many assumed to be a firearm.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that Pastor Adefarasin had voluntarily appeared at the police headquarters in Ikeja for questioning shortly after the video circulated.
Investigations, the police said, established that the object seen in the clip was a stun gun and not a conventional firearm.
“After a thorough investigation, including interrogation and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was established that the object in question was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm.
Consequent to our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the statement read.
The police stressed their commitment to transparency, the rule of law, and ensuring public safety.
Earlier Position Contrasted
This decision marks a shift from June when the then Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had warned that pointing a stun gun at another person could constitute a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
Speaking on Channels Television at the time, Jimoh described stun guns as prohibited riot control equipment, cautioning that using them to intimidate or instil fear could be deemed unlawful. He had also stated that both Pastor Adefarasin and the individual allegedly threatened in the clip would be invited for questioning.
The Viral Video
The video, which gained traction in June, showed Pastor Adefarasin seated in a Range Rover, holding the device during an exchange with another person.
While the footage sparked widespread criticism, the pastor repeatedly denied brandishing a firearm, maintaining that the object was non-lethal.
With the latest findings, the police have formally closed the case.
