The Plateau State Government has confirmed that a military operation is ongoing against bandits in the Garga axis of Kanam Local Government Area following a deadly security incident that claimed the lives of several security operatives.
The confirmation came after the Kanam Development Association raised alarm that no fewer than 20 security personnel, including local vigilantes, were killed in the council area.
According to the group, the security operatives who were part of a patrol team were ambushed on Friday in the Garga area of Kanam Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred around 4pm when a combined team of military personnel and vigilantes travelling in two vehicles on routine patrol across Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau and neighbouring communities came under heavy gunfire from suspected bandits near Wanka.
The attack resulted in the deaths of several members of the patrol team.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the state government expressed deep concern over the incident and acknowledged the anxiety it may have caused residents of Wanka, Kyaram, Gyambau and surrounding communities.
The government also confirmed reports that bandits invaded the Kyaram community and attacked residents.
While condemning the attack in strong terms, the government commended the bravery and sacrifice of the security personnel and local vigilantes who lost their lives while confronting the attackers.
It described their courage and dedication as a testament to their commitment to the safety of communities across Plateau State.
The government said the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang remains determined to safeguard the lives and property of citizens.
It added that authorities are working closely with the military and other security agencies to intensify surveillance, reinforce security presence and strengthen response operations in vulnerable border communities.
The government assured residents that decisive measures are being taken to restore and strengthen security in the affected areas.
Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while security operatives continue operations aimed at restoring lasting peace in the communities.
The government also warned against the spread of unverified information capable of heightening fear or tension.
It further disclosed that the state government is engaging traditional rulers, community leaders and other critical stakeholders in Kanam Local Government Area to support ongoing peace and security efforts.
Citizens were encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in tackling security threats.
The Plateau State Government reassured residents of Kanam Local Government Area and the entire state that it remains committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of lives, the safety of communities and the preservation of peace across Plateau State.
