The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has disclosed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, initially preferred activist Aisha Yesufu to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives before she eventually opted for the Senate.
Enekweizu made the revelation during an interview on Channels Television while addressing issues surrounding the party’s candidate selection process and internal disagreements ahead of the elections.
According to him, Obi had personally expressed support for Yesufu to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency. The proposal was part of consultations among party leaders aimed at reaching consensus on candidates and reducing internal conflicts before the submission of names to electoral authorities.
However, despite the recommendation, Yesufu reportedly chose to pursue a senatorial ticket instead of seeking election to the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
Enekweizu stated that political parties often advise members on the positions they should contest in order to maintain strategic balance and strengthen their chances during elections.
He explained that while aspirants are free to pursue offices of their choice, party leaders usually work to align individual ambitions with the broader objectives of the organisation.
The NDC secretary also addressed concerns from party members who were unsuccessful in securing tickets, noting that disappointment is a common feature of political contests.
He said the party has established mechanisms for resolving disputes and handling grievances from aggrieved aspirants, adding that the leadership remains committed to preserving unity within its ranks.
Enekweizu further assured members that ongoing disagreements would not derail preparations for future elections, stressing that party officials are focused on fostering cohesion and ensuring the NDC remains united as it moves forward.
