A major disaster was on Monday averted after operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service prevented a fuel tanker laden with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from exploding on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The tanker, carrying 26 tonnes of LPG, was involved in a solo accident near the Sat Guru Maharaj area, close to the Ibadan end of the former toll plaza. It was said to have swerved and overturned, blocking part of the busy highway.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday. He said firefighters swiftly deployed equipment to stabilise the situation and avert what could have been a deadly explosion.
“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a Mack trailer tanker, registration number T25163LA, fully loaded with LPG, had swerved and fallen on an open road,” Akinwande said. “The officers quickly swung into action, applying safety measures to prevent an explosion. No casualty was recorded, the tanker was secured, and normal vehicular movement has since been restored.”
The incident caused temporary traffic disruption before emergency teams successfully cleared the scene.
