The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of one person following an attack on supporters welcoming politician and broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat back to Ibadan.
The police said the incident occurred shortly after the supporters departed Molete for Iwo Road, where Agidigbo FM, Hamzat’s radio station, is located.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, identifying the deceased as 40 year old Azeez Tajudeen from Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to the statement, Tajudeen sustained a severe injury to his right eye during the attack by suspected hoodlums.
He was subsequently rushed to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The police said the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, had directed the Command Monitoring Unit to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
The Command also urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the police at least 48 hours before holding processions or public gatherings.
It said advance notification would enable the police to make adequate security arrangements and help prevent similar incidents.
The police further appealed to members of the public with useful information about the attack to assist investigators in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of those responsible remain subjects of the ongoing investigation.
