The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to the Kano State Government to urgently address water supply challenges at its permanent Orientation Camp in Karaye, warning that the situation poses operational and health concerns for Corps Members.
Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House in Kano.
Nafiu also called for the expansion of the camp’s multi-purpose hall, noting that its current size is inadequate for orientation lectures and other indoor activities, especially given the increasing number of Corps Members deployed to the state.
In addition, he requested the constitution of the NYSC State Governing Board and Local Government Committees to strengthen administration and improve coordination across the 44 local government areas where Corps Members serve.
According to the DG, more than 12,000 Corps Members are currently posted across Kano State, with about 75% serving as teachers in public schools. He added that the state is also benefiting from the deployment of medical personnel, including 102 doctors, 79 pharmacists, and 90 nurses working in government-owned health facilities.
Nafiu expressed appreciation for the state government’s ongoing support, which includes supplementing feeding allowances during camp, renovating hostels, covering burial expenses for deceased Corps Members, and providing repairs for the NYSC State Secretariat’s utility vehicle.
Responding, Governor Yusuf commended the NYSC for its positive impact on the state’s socio-economic development and assured continued support. He pledged to deploy a technical team to assess the Karaye camp for upgrades, promising that renovation work would commence as soon as the evaluation is completed.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Corps Members serving in the state.
