The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of three additional AW109 Trekker helicopters in Italy as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s air power and enhance counter-terrorism and internal security operations.
The helicopters were formally handed over to a Nigerian delegation during an official acceptance ceremony in Italy, marking another milestone in the Federal Government’s drive to modernise the Air Force and improve its operational capabilities.
According to the NAF, the newly acquired aircraft will significantly enhance its capacity to carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, provide close air support, execute rapid troop deployment, and respond swiftly to emerging security threats across the country.
The acquisition forms part of the Air Force’s broader fleet modernisation programme aimed at improving operational readiness and supporting ongoing military operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality.
Military authorities said the AW109 Trekker helicopters are designed to operate effectively in diverse and challenging environments, enabling the Air Force to undertake complex missions while strengthening joint operations with other security agencies.
The additional aircraft are expected to improve the military’s ability to safeguard lives and property, reinforce national security, and sustain ongoing efforts to restore peace in troubled parts of the country.
The delivery underscores the Federal Government’s continued investment in strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities through the acquisition of modern military equipment and enhanced operational assets.
