The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over rising tensions in the Gulf region amid the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for strict adherence to the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Convention, particularly with regard to respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, warned that further escalation could have grave consequences for regional and global stability. It urged all sides to refrain from actions capable of intensifying hostilities and to place dialogue above confrontation.
According to the government, restraint in the use of lethal force is imperative to prevent further civilian casualties and to avoid undermining established norms of international law. It stressed that preserving the existing legal framework regulating the use of force remains essential for protecting victims, safeguarding civilian populations and maintaining international order.
Nigeria reiterated its longstanding commitment to non-alignment, multilateralism and constructive engagement, expressing support for renewed diplomatic efforts within established international and regional frameworks to resolve the crisis.
The government also welcomed initiatives aimed at confidence-building, mediation and dialogue, encouraging all stakeholders involved in the conflict to pursue peaceful resolution in the interest of collective security and shared prosperity.
It added that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the international community in calling for calm and maintained that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect and adherence to international law.
