Nigeria has reaffirmed its longstanding ties with the Republic of Benin by joining the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration, underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to regional cooperation, peace and security in West Africa.
The colourful ceremony, held at the iconic Amazone in Cotonou, featured impressive military displays and cultural performances, with the Nigerian contingent delivering one of the event’s most outstanding performances.
According to a statement issued by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Major Akinola Ajibola, the Nigerian delegation was led by the Commander of 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi.
The statement said the Nigerian contingent captivated dignitaries and spectators with a flawless march past executed in both slow and quick time, demonstrating exceptional discipline, impeccable coordination and remarkable military precision.
The display earned widespread applause from the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, alongside senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and thousands of spectators in attendance.
The highlight of Nigeria’s participation was the Nigerian Army’s silent drill performance, which showcased extraordinary dexterity, perfect synchronisation and exceptional mastery of arms handling. The breathtaking display received a standing ovation from distinguished guests and further projected the professionalism and operational excellence of the Nigerian Army.
Among those present at the ceremony were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mopelola Adeola Ibrahim, the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the Republic of Benin, Colonel S. A. Yahaya, senior military officers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of friendly nations.
The Nigerian Army said the country’s participation reflected the enduring cordial relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin while reinforcing its commitment to military diplomacy, stronger regional partnerships and the promotion of peace, stability and cooperation across West Africa.
It added that the contingent’s exceptional performance not only highlighted the operational excellence of the Nigerian Army but also reaffirmed the deep historical, cultural and diplomatic ties that continue to unite both neighbouring countries.
The Army noted that Nigeria’s participation in the anniversary celebration symbolised the enduring spirit of friendship, mutual respect and regional solidarity shared by both nations.
