The (NAFDAC) has sealed 18 warehouses in Niger State after uncovering expired food products valued at over N100 million, describing the discovery as a serious threat to public health.
The enforcement operation, carried out in parts of the state, revealed large quantities of expired consumables allegedly stored for redistribution to unsuspecting consumers.
NAFDAC officials said some of the products had been tampered with, repackaged or relabelled to conceal their expired status before being reintroduced into the market.
The agency explained that the action formed part of its ongoing nationwide clampdown on substandard and expired goods. It warned that the circulation of such products poses grave risks to consumers, particularly when expiry dates are altered to mislead buyers.
Authorities confirmed that the affected warehouses have been shut down, while investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those involved in the illegal operation.
NAFDAC stated that individuals found culpable would face strict legal consequences under existing regulations.
The agency also urged consumers to remain vigilant by checking expiry dates before purchasing food items and reporting suspicious products to the appropriate authorities, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of food and drug distribution channels across the country.
