The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed that a mother and her son narrowly escaped death after a Lexus sport utility vehicle overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency described the early morning incident as a lone but serious traffic accident.
According to the statement, the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT was travelling from Isheri towards Igando when it suddenly lost stability and overturned three times before coming to rest amid heavy peak-hour traffic along the busy corridor.
LASTMA operatives deployed in the area were said to have responded swiftly to the scene and carried out a coordinated rescue operation. The occupants, identified as a mother and her son, were extricated from the severely damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild trauma, narrowly avoiding a fatal outcome.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division provided security reinforcement, maintaining crowd control and securing the accident scene during the rescue and evacuation process.
The statement added that family members of the victims arrived shortly after being notified and conveyed them for further medical evaluation and treatment.
To prevent secondary accidents and ease traffic congestion along the Lagos State University axis, LASTMA officials coordinated the evacuation of the damaged vehicle with support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency. The vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation and necessary administrative procedures.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that the accident did not result in loss of life and wished the victims a speedy recovery. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management and sustained road safety enforcement.
Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and carry out routine mechanical checks, particularly on critical components such as braking systems, before embarking on journeys. He warned that excessive speed combined with mechanical faults poses significant risks and can lead to serious road tragedies on major expressways.
