The African music world today bids farewell to one of the legends, Guitar Boy Sit Victor Uwaifo. The Benin born master guitarist, composer, singer and Professor of Sculpture passed today after decades of monumental presence at the top of Nigerian highlife music. He died after a brief illness.

The artist whose many popular songs became national anthems sort of and were rehashed, covered or imitated by many other artists across all genres passed at the age of 80. The Lagosian will bring you a comprehensive tribute to this icon in subsequent posts.
Uwaifo is regarded as the first professional musicians to be awarded with the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
He was also the first Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria.
Adieu Sir Victor Uwaifo!
