The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned from his position following allegations of certificate forgery leveled against him.
His resignation was confirmed on Tuesday in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, who said the President had accepted the minister’s decision to step down.
According to Onanuga, President Tinubu “accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him.”
Nnaji, who was appointed to the cabinet in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to the President, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve.
“I thank Mr. President for the privilege to contribute to national development through the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology,” Nnaji reportedly stated in his letter, while alleging that he had “been a target of blackmail by political opponents.”
Onanuga further noted that President Tinubu commended the former minister for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The resignation comes amid growing public scrutiny over the authenticity of some officials’ credentials, an issue that has continued to stir controversy within Nigeria’s political space.
Nnaji’s exit marks one of the most high-profile ministerial resignations in the Tinubu administration since its inauguration in May 2023.
As of press time, the Presidency has not announced a replacement for the vacant position at the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology.
