A man identified as Opeyemi Lawal has reportedly died after he was allegedly assaulted by some car park officials at a parking facility in the Marina area of Lagos.
The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday after Lawal was accused of theft within the car park.
According to information shared online, the victim was allegedly beaten and restrained by two officials who operate at the car park. A Facebook user, Sheriff Ojon, who posted about the incident on Monday, claimed that Lawal was tortured during the assault before he eventually died from the injuries he sustained.
Ojon alleged that the officials tied the victim’s hands and legs while beating him. He added that pleas from residents and bystanders asking the attackers to release the man were ignored.
According to the post, some witnesses said Lawal repeatedly begged to be freed, claiming he was about to die, but the alleged attackers refused.
“One of the attackers reportedly said he would not untie Tope Lawal because he had insulted him two days earlier,” the Facebook user wrote while recounting statements from an eyewitness.
Residents Protest Death
Following the incident, residents of the area reportedly staged a protest on Monday at a nearby police station, demanding justice over the death of the victim.
In one of the protest videos seen by reporters, a woman who spoke in the footage said several traders in the area pleaded with the suspects to stop the assault and release Lawal, but their appeals were ignored.
“All the women selling clothes were begging the man they called Alhaji to release him, but he refused,” she said in the video. “Even the young man kept pleading that he was about to die, yet they still refused to untie him.”
Images circulating on social media showed the victim lying lifeless with visible bruises on parts of his body.
Police Yet to Respond
When contacted for comments, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, did not respond to calls and messages sent to her phone as of the time this report was filed.
Similar Cases Reported
Incidents involving assaults by park officials and transport union members have been reported in the past.
In September 2025, the Lagos State Police Command arrested a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Shamsideen Adio, after a man allegedly died following an assault linked to him in Lagos.
The suspect was also accused of attacking a dispatch rider during the same period.
