Abuja | President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major-General Waidi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, replacing the outgoing service chief in a strategic reshuffle aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s military leadership and national security framework.
The appointment comes at a critical time as the nation continues to face complex security challenges, including insurgency in the Northeast, armed banditry, and other threats to public safety. Major-General Shaibu’s extensive operational experience positions him to lead the Nigerian Army through these multifaceted challenges.
Distinguished Military Career
Major-General Shaibu, a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Course 41 Regular Combatant, is also a member of the Nigerian Army Armour Corps. His career has been marked by a series of high-profile command and staff roles that have contributed significantly to national security.
He served as the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast, where he played a pivotal role in degrading terrorist networks and facilitating the surrender, rehabilitation, and reintegration of insurgents and their families. Prior to this, he was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, achieving notable successes in stabilizing conflict-affected areas.
Shaibu later served at the Defence Space Agency in Abuja for 14 months, adding a technological and strategic dimension to his operational expertise. He also held critical positions such as Director of Training at Army Headquarters, Commander of the 21 Special Armour Brigade, Bama, and Principal Staff Officer at Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
Awards and Recognition
In 2024, Major-General Shaibu was honoured with the Security Watch Award for the Most Outstanding Defence Command in Africa, underscoring the effectiveness of his leadership and his contribution to regional security. His efforts have been widely recognized for enhancing operational efficiency and fostering community reintegration programs for former combatants.
Commitment to National Security
Security analysts note that Shaibu’s appointment comes at a time when Nigeria requires experienced military leadership to address insurgency, banditry, and evolving security threats across multiple regions.
