The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has called for improved security measures in Borno State following the recent bomb blasts in Maiduguri that left several people dead and injured.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed that the explosions occurred almost simultaneously at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, the Monday Market Roundabout and the Post Office area, resulting in 23 deaths and 108 injuries.
The attacks, believed to have been carried out using improvised explosive devices by suspected Boko Haram fighters, were reported around 7 p.m. shortly after Muslims broke their fast.
In a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Abdullahi, and National Secretary, Nasir Balogun, the group expressed concern over the renewed threat to lives and property.
The group commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing service chiefs to relocate to Borno State to investigate the attacks, describing the move as timely. It also praised the efforts of security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force, in combating insurgency across the country.
Describing the return of suicide bombings as unacceptable, the group urged security forces to intensify efforts and adopt stronger strategies to prevent future occurrences. It added that better coordination among security agencies would enhance the fight against terrorism.
The group also cautioned against the politicisation of security challenges, urging Nigerians to focus on providing practical solutions rather than criticising the government.
It further condemned the killings during the holy month of Ramadan and called on Muslims to uphold the values of the period.
The organisation also expressed support for regulatory efforts aimed at addressing social issues, including the enforcement of restrictions on the sale of alcohol in sachets and small bottles, citing health concerns among youths.
The group concluded by urging Nigerians to remain united in the fight against insecurity and wished Muslims a peaceful Eid celebration.
