No fewer than 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, have resigned their membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The list of the affected lawmakers was released on Saturday evening by the Assembly’s Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, who confirmed that the House had verified and authenticated the resignations.
According to the statement, those who exited the NNPP with the governor include the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore; Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello Butu Butu; Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Shehu Fammar; and Chief Whip, Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki.
Other lawmakers who resigned represent constituencies across the state, including Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai/Shanono, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Gwale, Karaye, Kura/Garun Malam, Madobi, Minjibir, Rano, Tarauni and Wudil.
“A total of 22 members of the House of Assembly resigned their membership from the NNPP in the state,” the statement said.
The Assembly explained that the announcement was made to formally inform the public and clarify the political status of the affected lawmakers following the governor’s defection.
Governor Yusuf had on Friday announced his resignation from the NNPP, citing a deepening internal crisis within the party and the need to safeguard the broader interests of Kano State residents.
Reports indicated that the governor defected alongside 21 state lawmakers, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government council chairmen in the state.
The development is expected to significantly weaken the NNPP’s political foothold in Kano, as several party members and government officials continue to realign with the governor’s political direction.
Among top officials who have so far resigned from the NNPP is the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, who announced his exit from the party with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.
