Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and broadcaster, Aliyu Abubakar Getso, describing his passing as “a monumental loss to journalism and to the state.”
In a condolence message issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf hailed the late Getso as a “distinguished professional whose works contributed immensely to the growth of journalism, information dissemination, and public enlightenment in Kano and beyond.”
He noted that Getso, widely respected for his integrity, professionalism, and ethical reporting, left a lasting legacy in the media landscape of northern Nigeria.
“The late Aliyu Abubakar Getso was a true professional whose contributions left an indelible mark on the media industry in Kano State. His dedication, honesty, and mentorship will continue to inspire generations of journalists,”

A Career Dedicated to Journalism
Aliyu Getso, who spent several decades in the media industry, served as an editor at Freedom Radio, contributed to Vision FM and Premier Radio Kano, and also worked with the Kano State Ministry of Information.
He was a former State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and a strong advocate for press freedom, professional excellence, and media workers’ welfare.
Colleagues described him as a mentor and role model to younger journalists, known for his humility, generosity, and deep commitment to journalistic integrity.
Tributes and Final Rites
Governor Yusuf prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive Getso’s shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while extending heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire media community in Kano.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un,” the governor said, invoking the Islamic expression for mourning.
PUNCH Online earlier reported that Aliyu Abubakar Getso passed away early Sunday morning in Kano. His daughter, Aisha Getso, confirmed his death in a Facebook post written in Hausa, stating that he died around 3:00 a.m.
The veteran journalist was laid to rest later that morning at his residence in Jambulu, Kano, with family members, friends, and media colleagues in attendance.
